R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva Blanco, 2004

£30.00

Unlike so many slightly anodyne modern white Riojas this is unashamedly traditional.  Ageing for six years in oak barrels has given this Viura dominated wine amazing complexity and a wonderful waxy texture.  Oxidative and nutty with lots of fresh stone fruits, sour apricots and savoury herbs.  One of the true treasures of the wine world.

Jancis Robinson – 18/20

“Pale gold. Complex with oxidative aromas that are cedary and almost resinous. Chewy, wild and bone dry but somehow has the flavour of sour apricots and rosemary and all sorts of seemingly conflicting characteristics that make a wonderful whole. A firm grip that is somehow tannic but not astringent. Very long and fresh. Released this year. Perfect in this style. Will probably go on for ever. GV [good value] (JH)” (20.06.2017)

Decanter Magazine (Sarah Jane Evans MW) – 95pts

“Only recently released, and it’s terrific value at 13 years old. Impressively fresh; Lopez de Heredia have the recipe for the elixir of life. Fermented in venerable vats over 100 years old, and aged for six years in oak, there’s exceptional refinement. It’s an original: penetrating, intense, developed, and softened by almonds and honey.” (03.04.2017)

R. Lòpez de Heredia

Having seen their vineyards devastated by Phylloxera in the mid 19th century, Bordeaux negociants travelled south to Spain to find an alternative source of high quality grapes. Founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed in their footsteps.

Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was an ideal combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.

For over a century Lopez de Heredia’s foundations have been rooted in their love and passion for this land and its harvest. They cherish their heritage, and this combination of love and the rigorous quality standards they apply have become their trademark and remain their maxim for today and the future.

Bodegas López de Heredia stands out as one of the few family-run bodegas regulated by the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja – DOC (Appellation region).

Description

Released this year having spent its life up till now ageing in old oak barrels, this is a classic, traditional white Rioja of incredible complexity. Sour apricots and savoury herbs on the nose are underpinned with wonderful fruit sweetness (in sugar terms it’s bone dry). In spite of its oxidative nature it is fantastically fresh and has a great life ahead of it, if you can keep your hands off it. A benchmark.
