Liquid Farm “Four” Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, 2014

£65.00

Tighter and more focused than the Gold Slope but still ripe and rounded.  This is made from the pick of Liquid Farm’s barrels (see description below).  Fresh and focused with green apple, stone fruits and baking spices.  Very concentrated and long.  Something new every time you come back to the glass.

Wine Enthusiast – 94pts

“This is the best barrel blend from the vintage, utilizing 40% Clos Pepe, 40% Bentrock, 10% Zotovich and 10% Kessler-Haak vineyards. Rounded aromas of Pink Lady apple mix with chalk, seared lemon peels and a savory saltiness on the nose. The palate is delicate in flavor but strong on grippy texture, with sliced apple, tangy kumquat and grapefruit pith.” (01.11.2016)

Liquid Farm

Jeff and Nicki Nelson started Liquid farm out of frustration at the difficulty in finding Californian wines made in the style they wanted to drink.  They wanted to drink lower alcohol, restrained wines with terroir driven characteristics and too often they were presented with overly ripe fruit bombs.

Minerality was a crucial element and this meant the use of little if any new oak.  The search for vineyards began and in 2009 the first four barrels of Liquid Farm were made.

The Golden Slope is their take on Meursault with broader, rounder flavours and aromas.  This does not come from the use of new oak with only around 15% used when making this cuvée.

The Four is their homage to their very first four barrels in 2009.  This is very much their flagship wine and will improve with age.

Description

What makes FOUR, FOUR?

“In 2011 we found FOUR barrels that just had something more ethereal to them…More musky, earthiness and this sort of perfect balance of power and finesse. Those FOUR barrels were held back from Golden Slope to be bottled on their own creating the FOURth wine we had made to date (The first two being White Hill and Golden Slope, the third being Rosé). We started out with FOUR barrels at our humble start in 2009 and with one of our favorite numbers being FOUR and another’s childhood soccer number being FOUR – the wine sort of named herself. Its a sexy expression of Chardonnay that drinks incredibly near term over the course of a few days and that ages beautifully if you’re able to resist opening. Extremely limited quantities of this wine are available.”
