It was in 1835 when the young Manuel María González Ángel founded González Byass and started a long, and passion-filled journey, dedicated to the world of wine.

Manuel Maria found the support he needed to grow the business in his uncle, José Ángel, Tío Pepe (Uncle Joe). He showed his nephew everything he knew about Fino wines, so much so that his name was given to the winery’s founding solera, where today you can still see the name, “Solera del Tío Pepe”.

Inspired by the continual development in export and the growing success of his company, Manuel María González decided to join forces with Robert Blake Byass, his English agent, to whom he wrote a letter in 1844, recommending that Byass sell an “exceptionally pale…” wine. These were the very first barrels of Tío Pepe that were sent to the United Kingdom where they were very well received.

The alliance between the Byass and González families continued until 1988 when the Byass family withdrew from the business and the winery passed into the hands of the direct descendants of Manuel María González.

Today, it continues to be a family winery, presided over by the 5th generation of the González family who have always shown their passion for the world of wine, their love of nature and their care for the environment.

In 2016 Antonio Flores (pictured) was named “Best Winemaker of Fortified Wines in the World” according to the Winemaker of the Year awards, organised by the International Wine Challenge (IWC).

Description

Medium-deep amber colour with golden tinges and a steel coloured rim. Legs of medium intensity – clean and bright. A complex nose, intense with presence of dried fruits such as toasted almonds, hazelnuts, acetal hints with aromas of varnish and warm, mellow oak. On the palate, powerful and persistent with balance between acidity and bitterness. The toasted notes are more prominent on the palate with a long, powerful, warm and complex aftertaste. A wine that has reached its peak; one step away from perfection!

This year was wet with 76 days of rain and a total of 694mm rainfall. The poniente wind from the Atlantic dominated with an average temperature of 20.1ºC
