Domaine André Berthet Rayne Cairanne Vielles Vignes, 2017

£15.50

Having been considered by many as the most consistently excellent of the Côtes du Rhône Villages, this tiny commune was elevated to “Cru” status, alongside such prestigious names as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in 2016.  Little known outside its native France, these wines offer superb value for money.  From ancient 60 year-old vines, this one has real intensity of aroma on the nose; fresh raspberry and strawberry with a dusting of cocoa. The palate is well superbly balanced with lots of red fruit coming through.  Vibrant, fresh and long.

Domaine André Berthet Rayne

The Berthet-Rayne family have been farming here since 1880, and today the 25 hectare estate is run by André, his wife Marina, and their daughter Alexandra André is very much committed to a natural approach in the vineyard, seeing this as a return to common sense, and the estate was certified organic in 2011. Their excellent Cairanne comes from vines with an average age of 60 years old.

Description

Grapes are destemmed after harvesting before fermentation occurs via the délestage technique; softening tannins. Pumping over during fermentation encourages maximum colour and fruit extraction. Juice undergoes 20 days maceration before pressing, maturation occurs in concrete tanks for one year before bottling.
