Dom Berthoumieu “Cuvée Charles de Batz” Madiran, 2013

£17.50

Tannat dominated blend from 100 year old vines grown in gravelly limestone soils in the foothills of the Pyrenees.  Christmas cake, blackberries and plums on the nose.  Powerful and concentrated on the palate with plenty of grip but the tannins are smooth and ripe.  Pass the cassoulet.

“Of course, this 90% Tannat wine is still very young. But it’s impressive, rich and concentrated and promises to age well. It is dense with both tannins and fruit, black plum and berry flavors dominating, cut by acidity. It will be ready to drink from 2019.” (01.06.2016)

Domaine Berthomieu

Domaine Berthomieu is located in the heart of the homeland of the famous Musketeers of Louis XIV. Here in the stronghold of D’Artagnan, alias “Charles de Batz”, the Barré family produces majestic Madiran from Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate was founded in 1850 by Virgile Dutour. After several generations, Marie-Line and Didier Barré took control of the estate in the 1990s. On its 25 hectares, this property produces wines that combine ambitious personality, identity and balance.

Claire and Marion Bortolussi now continue the work started more than 150 years ago while bringing their own vision of what the great wines of the Southwest can aspire to be.

Description
