De Kleine Wijn Koöp “Ou Treffer” Cinsaut 2017

£25.00

Ou Treffer is Afrikaans for an old hit, as in a record, symbolic of Cinsaut’s heritage as the old workhorse grape of South Africa.  This does the grape a disservice.  When yields are low the wine made from it can be stunning.  The grapes come from the second oldest block of Cinsaut in Stellenbosch which yield as little as 0.5 of a ton per hectare!  A beautifully elegant, fragrant wine with aromas of raspberry and fresh herbs.  Soft tannins, silky mouthfeel and terrific length.  Serve slightly chilled.  Only 100 bottles in the UK!

De Kleine Wijn Koöp

De Kleine Wijn Koöp – ‘the little wine co-op’ – is a collaboration spearheaded by Jan Solms and Rohan Etsebeth of Stellenbosch design studio Fanakolo and videographer Faan Rabie, making fresh, of-the-moment, bona fide African wines from some of the best vineyards around the Cape.

The bottles are joys to behold, as you might expect from the creative brains behind some of South Africa’s most-loved wine labels.

These boys have noses for prime vineyards and grapes, and work with top drawer winemaking talent, so the juice inside the bottles is high caliber too. Minimal intervention niche wines, cool packaging, and charming storytelling.

Description

Strict selection means only the best grapes are picked for whole bunch fermentation in open-topped fermenters, with twice daily punch-downs for 10 days, after which it went into a single 500-litre old French oak barrel where it stayed for 9 months, before very light fining and bottling.
