R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva Tinto, 2004

£30.00

Like the white, this is an unapologetically traditional Rioja.  Aged for six years in old oak barrels it is complex, leathery, earthy and spicy with bags of fruit.  Really silky and elegant with a long life ahead.  Gorgeous and great value.

Jancis Robinson – 18/20

“Deep reddish garnet. Beautifully complex aromas: leather and undergrowth and yet still there is red fruit. A miracle. Silky and refined. Leathery, dry but there’s no dryness on the finish. So complex. They will soon be moving on to the 2005 (JH).” (30.06.2017)

Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate – 94pts

“The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that’s possible–umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence.” (Feb, 2015)

James Suckling – 94pts

“Very perfumed with dried flowers plus hints of leather and smoke. Lots of depth and elegance to this wine with polished velvety tannins and a long finish. Wonderful texture. Drink or hold.” (Dec, 2016)

R. Lòpez de Heredia

Having seen their vineyards devastated by Phylloxera in the mid 19th century, Bordeaux negociants travelled south to Spain to find an alternative source of high quality grapes. Founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed in their footsteps.

Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was an ideal combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.

For over a century Lopez de Heredia’s foundations have been rooted in their love and passion for this land and its harvest. They cherish their heritage, and this combination of love and the rigorous quality standards they apply have become their trademark and remain their maxim for today and the future.

Bodegas López de Heredia stands out as one of the few family-run bodegas regulated by the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja – DOC (Appellation region).
