Black Elephant Vintners “Amistad” Syrah 2014

£26.00

Winemaker & viticulturalist Jacques Wentzel has hand-harvested Syrah from five distinct vineyards around the stunningly beautiful Franschhoek valley.  Natural fermentation, with just under one-quarter as whole bunches.  No chemical additives and minimal added sulphur.  Goes through an old basket press prior to a year in French oak barrels (a mixture of 225, 300 and 500-litres, one-tenth new the rest old.

Massive Syrah aroma of blackcurrants, black pepper and lavender. Full-bodied yet silky, with a thirst-quenching wet-stone minerality (where did that come from?) and a long, spicy finish.  Sublime.  Best served slightly below room temperature.  Just 4,700 bottles produced.

Black Elephant Vintners

Black Elephant is a coming together of different backgrounds and ideas to make thrilling wine from a very special place, the Franschhoek valley. Perhaps too often overlooked for more famous or modish regions, Franschhoek is one of the oldest winegrowing areas of the Cape.

Kevin Swart (‘black’ in Afrikaans) and Raymond Ndlovu (‘elephant’ in a number of southern African languages) were joined by winemaker Jacques Wentzel, who was born and bred on Robben Island and earned his winemaking stripes at Warwick and nearby Môreson before striking out on his own.

The wines are delicious and a seriously huge amount of fun, from a small, passionate team constantly innovating.
