Ahrens Family “The White Black” 2016

£28.00

From the black lands, the Swartland, this is an old-school white Rhône blend from old vines on the Paardeberg, a granite formation on the southern edge of the Swartland.  Hand-picked, naturally fermented and matured in 300 to 600-litre tight-grain French oak barrels for 12 months.  It’s so impressive.  Medium-bodied, peach and citrus fruit, layer upon layer upon layer of texture and flavour, wet stone mineral coolness and very long on the finish.  Just 1,200 bottles made.

Individually wrapped, individually numbered and wax sealed.

Ahrens Family

Albert Ahrens earned his stripes in the Swartland with Lammershoek, before working in Champagne, Priorat and the Rhône Valley. He drives 40,000km per year between vineyards, making the Ahrens Family wines at his cellar in Wildepaardejacht, a spectacularly serene location beneath the Du Toitskloof mountains, just outside Paarl.

These are terroir-driven wines from all over the Cape, taking in the Swartland, Voor-Paardeberg, Stellenbosch (Bottelary to be precise), Franschhoek and Elgin. Wines that, in Albert’s words, have “an address” to them, an identity wound up in the environment. He convinces growers to sell him tiny amounts of their very best grapes, so while there’s not much of the wine available, it comes from some of the finest fruit going.
